Karnataka govt on its toes for Tipu Sultan anniversary, bans processions
The Karnataka government Saturday celebrated the birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan, the 18th century ruler of the erstwhile Mysore Kingdom, under a thick security blanket to counter protests by the BJP and Hindu outfits. Calling Tipu a religious bigot, the BJP had urged the coalition government of Janata Dal (Secular) and Congress to drop its decision to celebrate 'Tipu Jayanthi'. As a precautionary measure, authorities in many districts of the state have restricted the assembly of more than four people.
