Engineer's Day: The little-known histories of Indian engineers before 1947
In the period between the World Wars, homegrown Indian engineers fought for a greater role in the engineering profession. The experiences of these expatriate engineers contrasted considerably with that of their Indian colleagues in the PWD. The venture, which Indian Engineering called 'a great Indian enterprise', brought Ganga Ram a fortune that helped him become a philanthropist. Indian engineers had to be made in their image but could never quite hope to achieve the ideal of the gentleman generalist.
