First Black Female White House Reporter Had To Pawn Her Watch Just To Eat
It was a humiliating practice, she wrote in her 1974 autobiography, A Black Woman's Experience - From Schoolhouse to White House. Shortly after becoming an accredited White House reporter, Dunnigan wanted to accompany President Harry S Truman on his tour to the West Coast. No African-American reporter had ever been on such a tour. The 6-foot-tall, 500-pound bronze statue, made by Kentucky sculptor Amanda Matthews, portrays the reporter clad in one of a handful of her good dresses and scuffed pumps.
